NATIONAL RECORD!

3/13/09 - National Scholastic Indoor Championships - Armory
They knew they were going up against one of the best hurdle teams ever in Sheepshead Bay, but Coach Febles' charges had eyed this date since the season started in the fall.  And like every Prep runner, they had a rich history on their side.   Andrew Hemmings, Ed Allison and Bruce Grant kept it close, and when Wayne Seaton crossed the line just .03 ahead of their Brooklyn rivals, the Prep faithful erupted.  A NEW NATIONAL RECORD of 29.15 (old record was 29.24 by Metuchen HS ion 1972) now belongs to the Rams!

Tantalizingly close to another National title only 3 hours later, the Sprint Medley Relay of Seaton, Grant, Zach Keefer and Mike Jennings just missed minting rings of their own, but set a new CHSAA record in the event, taking 2nd in the Nation.  Seaton led off in first place in 22.3, Grant handed off a close 2nd in 22.5, Keefer motored into first place with a 49.1 second 400m, and Mike Jennings ran his best 800m of the season (1:55.8) but just got edged down the straightaway.  Their time of 3:29.87 breaks Bishops Loughlin's CHSAA indoor record of 3:30.90, set in 2001.   Andrew Hemmings long jumped a respectable 20'10.75", and the 4x400 just missed the final (Grant 53.1, Petrovich 50.1, Rivera 51.6, Keefer 49.5  3:24.45).   The history pages are crowded in Fordham Prep lore, but new stories were added this weekend and there are still two exciting days to go!

Saturday, March 14th - National Champs - Armory
Wayne Seaton takes 3rd place in the Pentathlon to earn his 3rd All-American etching, and as top finisher from New York State, lays claim to unofficial title of "top athlete in the state".   And his gaudy score of 3644 may be a CHSAA record--the 4th record Wayne is a part of.

Jon Annunziata smashes 50 foot barrier!  His toss of 50'7.25" is best at Prep since Mike Sangobowale in 2001 and first shot put over the half century mark in the "Phipps Era".  Congrats to Pupil and Coach!

Ramzy Salem put up some nice numbers in the Pent, including an 18'1" LJ,  before bowing out of the 1000m with hamstring injury.   Anthony Carr vaults 13 feet and Sophs Seminario, Paulus and Sal Annunziata log valuable Nationals experience.

Sunday, March 15, 2009
4x800 takes 2nd, lands another All-American honor, as team races  to perfectly executed 7:52.29--the #1 time in New York State this year.  Andrew Hemmings Tjs 42'10".

3/7/09 - NY State Championships - Cornell Univ.
Wayne Seaton breaks 29-year old 55m Hurdle record with 7.42 2nd place finish!  Bruce Grant is 6th in #3 AllTime CHSAA 7.54!  4x800 is All-State with 3rd place finish!  Anthony Carr is 9th in PV at 13'6", Andrew Hemmings top 15 in LJ and TJ, Jourdan White, in his 5th state meet despite injury

22.24

2/24/09 - 72nd Eastern States Champs - Armory
Wayne Seaton had a 10 page paper hanging over his head on Tuesday night, but before he got to typing, he rewrote two school records in the space of 45 minutes.  His 7.47 for the 55m high hurdles lowered the school and Sectional Record, and his 22.24 in the 200 meter trials (run in difficult lane 2) also lowered his own school record (22.57 at last year's Easterns).  Wayne headlined a great meet for the Prep that saw Bruce Grant join Wayne in the hurdle finals, twice racing to PRs of 7.65 and 7.63.  The traditionally "stacked" event at Easterns is always the Distance Medley, and the Prep's squad held it's own, medalling in a fast 10:26.85.  Mike Jennings anchored in a personal best 4:22.4.   In the "nice prep for states" category, Anthony Carr pole vaulted 13'6" and Andrew Hemmings triple jumped 43'3.25".  And Zach Keefer ripped his 8th sub 50 second 400m of the season.....49.60

FULL FORCE

2/14/09 - CHSAA Intersectional Champs..."The Cities" - Armory
Rams repeat as CHSAA Indoor Champions by virtue of a complete team effort.  54 points more than doubles 2nd place team, and is the highest total scored at the Cities since Loughlin scored 54 in 1982, and the biggest margin of victory (30pts) since 1960!  The Prep will send an unprecedented 9 athletes to the State Championships next month.    New! Cities Story by A Friend of the Prep!
Triple Jump: Andrew Hemmings earns Meet MVP for field events with 44'8" win and 21'2" LJ silver
High Jump: Jourdan White wins his 5th CHSAA HJ title with a 6'2" clearance, then LJs to 4th place with 20'9" leap.
55mHH: Wayne Seaton and Bruce Grant BOTH dip under the 29 Year Old Meet record, going 1-2 in 7.60 and 7.66.  Ed Allison takes 6th, breaking 8 seconds for the first time (7.96)
600m: Zach Keefer pulls off spectacular come from behind win, breaking Conrad Dalton's  school record with a 1:20.90 effort.  New! 600m Video added!
1000m: Mike Jennings takes 3rd in fast 2:31.45, just missing Rey Mendez' 1993 school mark of 2:31.07
Pole Vault: Anthony Carr gets silver, leaping 13'6" and Keegan Talty clears 13'0" for 4th place
Shot Put: Mike Seminario takes 4th place in new school Soph record of 48'9.25", and Joe Paulus continues Soph wunderkind success, making final with 45' effort.  Ryan Fedak, Kyle Willemite and Paul Perez are newly minted 40 footers, earning throwers a team dinner.   (There goes the budget.....)
And the 4x800m Relay nailed it shut.  In all 8 team titels the Prep has won this decade, tehy've only won one relay title....until today.  When the Millrose quartet of Harley Griffiths, Petrovich, Jennings and Keefer narrowly miss meet record, racing to 7:56 victory

And just as key: Seniors Anthony Rivera and Ramzy Salem run valiant 4x400 legs before becoming victims of questionable disqualification call; Tom Jennings PRs with 10:05 3200m; Senior Tom Riley and Frosh Greg McNamara become newest sub-five milers; James Gallo wins Novice 1600m run in school novice record 4:45.14; Frosh Andrew Velasquez, Pat Gray, Gio Graziosa and Dennis Kennelly; Berent Kowarick vaults 12', then joins Tony Rosa, Doug O'Connell and Mike McNamara on 2nd fastest Soph 4x800 in Prep history

What a day!

2/8/09 - CHSAA Frosh & Soph Championships - Armory
Frosh & Sophs both take 2nd with great efforts.  The Prep scored more points combined than any team in the meet--a good sign of things to come.  Mike Seminarioe and Sal Annunziata lead 1-2 sweep in Soph Shot!

#1 in New York State!
Of course, it means nothing until we bring home the CHSAA title on Feb 14 (and our CHSAA competitors won't just hand it to us), but it's nice to be recognized by armorytrack.com

2/6/09 - New Balance Collegiate Invitational
- Armory

The Prep 4x400 becomes part of history as they crush the school 4x400m record, running
3:20.24, breaking the record set 3 weeks ago.  The time is the best in the CHSAA since the historic 71 year-old league record of 3:20.1 (yards--converts to 3:19.14) set by DeLaSalle HS in 1938!  In addition, the winner of this year's race was New Bern of North Carolina, who broke the National 4x400m record, running 3:13.06.

TAKE A BOW

1/25/09 - NYCHSAA Champs - Armory
It was an historic day for an historic program.  A devastating 94 points makes the Rams repeat winners of the Archdiocesan Championship.  Wayne Seaton wins Meet MVP tying the school 55mHH record and winning the 300m fir the 2nd straight year.   Andrew Hemmings is Field Events MVP by virtue of his TJ win and LJ silver medal.  John Horvath leads spectacular vault crew with 14'6" silver, along with 18 inch PR from Anthony Carr (13'6") and 12'6" 5th from Keegan Talty.  Jon Annunziata wins Sectional Shot Put Champion with 49' 4" toss, and little brother Sal launches big PR and Soph School record with a 46' bronze.  And the regulars did their thing....Keefer, Petrovich, Grant, Griffiths, Jennings, White et al played big roles racing and jumping to state-ranked performances.   Congrats!

The Frosh had a great meet, but Xavier had a better one.  Congrats to Xavier on their first-ever NYCHSAA Frosh title.    And congrats to gold medal winners Gio Grazioza (PV), Andrew Velaquez (HJ) and the 4x200m Relay of Taylor Smith, Kevin Reich, Pat Gray, Challenor Robertson and Dennis Kennelly

1/24/09 - New Balance Games - Armory
Shuttle Hurdle Relay of Andrew Hemmings, Ed Allison, Bruce Grant and Wayne Seaton lower their own National Catholic Record by winning their 2nd straight major invitational.  They become the first Catholic school to dip under 30 seconds with their time of 29.93!

Fri 1/16:  52nd Jesuit Champs-  Prep takes 20th Straight thanks to virtually dozens of PRs

Sat 1/17:  Stanner Games at Armory sees 3 Prep and one National Catholic School Record fall at the hands of the Rams!

It's the rare and special coach that can coach a team to a National record, but how about coaching TWO teams to break the same national record?  That's Mr. George Febles Sr....
Two years ago his Fordham hurdlers broke the National Catholic School record in the Shuttle Hurdle relay, and less than two years later, with 4 DIFFERENT HURDLERS, his charges have done it again.  Proof that lightning strikes twice!

Of course, Coach Matt Febles wouldn't be outdone, as Andrew Hemmings is first Prep athlete to Triple Jump 45 feet!  Andrew is now ranked 4th in the State!

Zach Keefer ran a PR 1:21.49 600m, and anchored the school-record 4x400

And those quarter milers.....8 of them to be exact.  Jennings, Petrovich, Seaton and Keefer lowered the Prep's school record to 3:23.08 (#4US, #2NY), but don't forget the 6th place "B" team of Bruce Grant, Anthony Rivera, Jared Blake and Ramzy Salem, who sailed to a time of 3:29.3.  Possibly the first time in Prep history two teams broke 3:30 in the same race!

Entering the meet with the number one time in the State (7:52.99), the Prep 4x800 needed to simply make sure they "got in".  And they executed perfectly.  Zach Keefer led off in first place in 1:58.4,  Mike Jennings extended the lead wit a 1:57.5, Harley Griffiths kept the lead at 30 meters with a 2:00.7 and Carlos Petrovich closed in 1:58.0, just getting edged by Farrell's James Farley.  2nd in the trials, but looking to repeat history at the Garden in 16 days.....

Varsity come out to play and play they do....
Jourdan White wins Loughlin HJ Championship with 6'6" clearance; Zach Keefer takes 600m silver with 1:21.71 effort; John Horvath leads dominant vault crew (Talty 12'6", Andrew Petrovich 12'0", Carr 12'0" PR, DiIorio 11'0") with 13'6" bronze, and Mike Jennings, in only his 2nd indoor race, takes 5th in the 1000m in a fast 2:34.01.

But it doesn't end there.  Bruce Grant served notice that he's ready to roll with a sterling 7.88 clocking, just missing the finals by.04 seconds.  Add in fine long jumps from Andrew Hemmings and Jourdan (20'7 and 20'6 respectively) and many other quick times, and it made for a great weekend heading into the holidays.
